Death as a Motivator for Kindness

Share

“If you kiss your child, or your wife, say that you only kiss things which are human, and thus you will not be disturbed if either of them dies.”  Epictetus’ Enchiridion

Could you do it?  This quote drives to the heart of Stoic Equanimity.  Again, could you do it?  When it comes to your loved ones there are one of three guaranteed outcomes:

  1. You will leave them in your death
  2. They will leave you in in their death
  3. You will die together

Never forget this…never.  It is essential to remember this when dealing with those you love.  With death in mind it becomes quite difficult to treat them badly.

  1. I just wrote this as my status”we say goodbye to the one we love without wanting to but that doesn’t mean we stop loving them. Sometimes goodbye is just a painful way of saying I love you. ”
